How to work in harmony with your husband? They say that if you want a marriage to last, don’t work with your spouse. Well, we might be the exception to the rule.
Craig, the Architect and I, the designer, have been married for 22 years. I decided to change carrier and go back to school for interior design. In 2000, I officially join Studio Westergard Architecture + Design.
We both have a passion for design, and we apply it in every aspect of our life: what we eat, where we travel and what we wear. We’ve learned to complement each other, and we know each other’s strengths and weaknesses
Craig with his space planning, technical abilities and communicating skills and me, I am the behind-the-scenes person and work with color, furniture and materials, flooring, wallcovering and lighting. We have evolved together not only in our marriage but also in our design aesthetic. In the beginning we were more traditional and now we are complete modernists.
We’ve learned to accept criticism from one another. It is not always easy, especially when it is coming from your husband or your wife. But deep down you know if someone else made this comment, you would accept it. We also learned to never contradict one another in front of a client. You need to have the same goals and objectives for the company and the key for achieving this is communication and mutual respect.
Finally, if you have an argument, never let it linger. Seat down, communicate, reset and move on. As they say, never go to bed angry with one another.It creates not only a happy marriage but also a good working environment.
As Cokie Roberts who was married for 51 years to Journalist Steven Roberts, said ‘’because marriage is an ever-evolving experience, we constantly shift, change, love harder, love less and, in some cases, start over’’.
