Between a classic mid-century modern vibe and stunning desert backdrop, Palm Springs (PS) has been our gateway from New York winters for the past 20 years.
HOW IT ALL BEGAN
On a trip to visit our friend who had moved to LA from NY City, we discovered this oasis. After a few days in Los Angeles, Kevin took us ‘’to a special place", one hour and a half south.
We fell in love with PS right away. The climate, the architecture, with large area of dry rocky desert next to glorious palm trees all nestled between San Jacinto
I remember being absolutely, completely blown away by the landscape and the beauty of it.
MID CENTURY PARADISE
The city of Palm Springs began to blossom when the mid-century modern style swept the architecture scene. The city became the epicenter of the movement. You can still see buildings from architects such as John Lautner, William F. Cody or Donald Wexler. These structures represented a new way of life. This is where movie stars, like the famous Rat-Pack from Hollywood had their homes.
In 2014, we acquired a small condo on the north side of town across from the tramway. Just a pied à terre that we renovated and then sold in 2018. That same year we had the opportunity to purchase a 3-bedroom condo close to downtown. We renovated it from top to bottom with a modern flair. We had acquired a few vintage Knoll pieces that we shipped from New York with other pieces that we knew would fit well in the space. A few things to do still but the major renovation is done.
It was a fun project working with local people from the area. The first condo that we renovated was much smaller but gave us the opportunity to meet these trade professionals that we could rely on. It is hard when you are 3 000 miles away.
Fortunately, we were able to go there frequently to monitor the work. As we are very detail-oriented and want everything ‘’just so’’, we were able to create a professional relationship with our team, respecting their knowledge but at the same time, showing them new ways to work.
